AYRSHIRE'S FORGOTTEN MANSIONS (1) FULLARTON HOUSE

There is a very nice wooded park to the East of Troon, where you can enjoy a picnic or a walk, and there are even some interesting old buildings, but one building you won't see is the house above, Fullarton House, built in 1745.

Instead, what you will see is the park's car park.

Next to this, there are what used to be a servants' quarters and coach house.

This is the main remnant of the former glories of Fullarton House, a residence which once played host to Prince Louis Napoleon, later the Emperor Napoleon III of France, in 1839.

The estate was purchased by Ayrshire council in 1928 and was
demolished by them in 1966, at a time when radical notions of "modernisation" were sweeping through Scotland, creating architectural anarchy and botched brutalism. The nearby coach house, however, saw a kinder fate. Built in the 1790s, it was converted into flats in 1974.

Nearby, surrounded by woods, you can also see the remains of Crosby Castle, the medieval residence that predated Fullarton House. This was converted into an icehouse when
Fullarton House was built in 1745.
