Prestwick, as we have said before, is something of a "semi-secret military base" for America and the UK. It is is also something of a stop-over point for President Trump when he combines politics with business (as he invariably does) as shown by him "holding court" at Turnberry in 2025 for a week or so, followed by another visit from his VP.
So, it is extremely interesting to hear that Prestwick is now becoming a major hub for Chinese cargo planes, with nearly 20 flights a week. Indeed, one wonders if the Presidential kudos of Prestwick plays some part in highlighting Prestwick as a cargo hub for the export-driven Chinese economy! If so, thank President Trump...I guess.
Air China Cargo began flights from Guangzhou in June 2025 and later added Chengdu (now daily) and Shanghai, with around 11 weekly services. China Southern Air Logistics started flying from Guangzhou in May 2025 with four flights a week. And Beijing Capital Airlines started four-times-weekly A330-200F services from Zhengzhou in October 2025.

This is a great boost to the Ayrshire economy, as these planes not only bring over all your online shopping from Chinese retail sites like Temu and Shein, but also they take Scottish produce, like whisky and salmon back to China.
However, it is interesting to note that these planes all fly through Russian airspace at a time when Russia is still involved in a brutal invasion of Britain's ally Ukraine. That kind of leaves a bad taste in the mouth of what is otherwise a feel-good economic story.
