Irvine is a town in North Ayrshire with a population of 33,698 or 39,527 (according to two conflicting entries on Wikipedia).
The vast majority are Christian or of "Christian origin," so you would think that Xmas would be a big deal or at least the excuse for a few decorations. But apparently North Ayrshire Council, which administers the town, disagrees as this photograph of the town centre sent to us by a friend shows. It was taken on the 22nd of December. It looks like somebody literally threw a cheap string of lights on a solitary tree and then went off to get pissed.
How to explain this? Possibly the council has completely run out of money or has been taken over by militant Marxist atheists. But if either of these were true, then it wouldn't have money for anything else either. Also the council is split between the three main parties as follows: Labour 11 councilors, SNP 11, Conservatives 7, Independent 4), so I don't quite see the rampant atheist Marxism either. So, this is still a mystery.
